City hydrants are flushed regularly to ensure they are in working order for fire protection and to remove mineral deposits that may accumulate in water mains. During hydrant flushing, it is not unusual for residents to periodically experience discolored water, pressure changes, and/or an increase in chlorine odor.
If you notice discoloration and rust particles in your water supply during this process, turn your faucets on cold and let the water run until clear. Running an outside faucet is best. The discoloration is caused by iron and manganese that have settled into the water mains. Iron and manganese are two common minerals in water. Neither pose any health hazard.
