Long Lake Fire Department Memorial

Intent of the Memorial

The Long Lake Fire Department Memorial was dedicated at Station 1 on October 7, 2014. The intent of the Memorial was to recognize by name all firefighters who had served our community, to provide a brief history of the Department, and to include the Firefighter’s Prayer and our Mission Statement.

Project Development

From idea stage to dedication spanned nearly 5 years and involved a great many members of our community.

Special Recognition

From idea stage to dedication spanned nearly 5 years and involved a great many members of our community. Several committee members took important leadership roles:

  • Steve Becker
  • Mike Brown
  • Jim Cox
  • Jim Elder
  • Kelly Shaunghnessy
  • Marv Wurzer

The Public Works Departments of both Long Lake and Orono also helped enormously.

Jon Crump from Leo A. Daly worked with us on our initial ideas and brought those to fruition. Jon also donated all of his time.

When we began to seek donations the response was overwhelming. Amongst those who supported the memorial Sam and Joyce Marfield deserve special mention as does Jan Ryan.

Groundbreaking & Materials Decision

Ground for the Memorial was broken in August of 2011 and in 2012 Cold Spring Granite was chosen to do the stone work and engraving.

Dedication of the Memorial

The dedication was held in conjunction with our annual Kid’s Day; an event during Fire Prevention Week. An enthusiastic and humble crowd of retired members and their families, along with numerous citizens and current firefighters celebrated this proud moment in our community’s history.

A Treasure & Lasting Tribute

As Fire Chief, I am quite humbled when I watch individuals locate the name of a family member or friend and see the look of appreciation and pride on their face. The Long Lake Fire Department Memorial is truly a treasure for all of us and a lasting tribute to all who dedicated their lives to keep us safe.
