Community Development

The Community Development Department is responsible for the review of building plans and the implementation of land use plans and policies of the City Council through administration of ordinances. The Department reviews permit and land use applications to ensure compliance with land use, setback, hardcover, floodplain management, and other City requirements. The department provides service and information to the general public, property owners, builders, and developers on all aspects of development and land use within Orono.

The Community Development Department provides support to the City Council and Planning Commission on land use applications and special projects. Please call or email one of the planning staff members if you have any questions related to development of your property, current land use applications, or general land use questions.

New Permit Review/ Inspection Process

As of Tuesday, January 4th, 2022, Nicole Egan is the Building Official, and Gary Nelson is the Building Inspector.  Nicole and her team will handle all code review, inspections, and documentation related to the building, plumbing, and mechanical codes.  Permits will continue to be processed through Citizen Serve, but direct all inspection requests to the Orono front desk @952-249-4600 and general building code inquiries to Nicole at 952-249-4625 or via email at negan@ci.orono.mn.us.
